Why the advertised fare isn't the real price

Cruise pricing is honest about the big number and quiet about the stack on top of it. Gratuities alone run $17 to $20 per person per day on the major lines in 2026, and most lines raised them this year. Add drinks, wifi, a specialty dinner or two, and shore excursions, and a typical couple spends $80 to $100 per person per day beyond the fare. On a 7-night cruise that's easily $1,100 to $1,400 the brochure never mentioned.

None of those costs are bad. Most are optional, and part of what makes cruising a good value is choosing which ones matter to you. The problem is comparing trips, or budgeting, on the fare alone. This calculator puts the whole number in front of you before you book, so the last-morning bill is a receipt instead of a surprise.
